Homeless Student Regulations

Homeless students shall, by definition, include the following:

1. Children and youths who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; or are abandoned in hospitals.

2. Children or youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.

3. Children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.

4. Migratory children who qualify as homeless for the purposes of this subtitle because the children are living in one of the above-described circumstances.

Any community member, agencies, or school personnel should inform the homeless liaison if they have knowledge of any students within our district that fit this homeless definition.

Be assured that:

1. Homeless students have a full and equal opportunity to succeed in schools in this district.
2. Homeless students receive free breakfast and lunch.
3. Homeless families, children, and youths receive educational services for which such families are eligible, including a preschool program and referrals to health care services, dental services, mental health services, and other appropriate services.
4. Parents and guardians of homeless children and youths will be informed of the educational and related opportunities available to their children and are provided with meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children.
5. Parents and guardians of a homeless child or youth, and any unaccompanied youth, will be informed of all transportation services and will be assisted in accessing transportation.
6. Children and youths who need to obtain immunizations, or immunization or medical records will receive assistance.
