QHS Boys Basketball Team Earns Second at Regional Tournament

The Quinter High School boys’ basketball team secured a trip to the Sub-State Tournament with a 57-44 victory on Friday, February 22 over the Dighton Hornets. The Bulldogs went on to finish as the runner-up. In the first round, the boys picked up a 46-36 win over Wheatland-Grinnell. Quinter’s final game was against the Wallace County Wildcats, they lost this game 59-52.
Quinter’s first game on Tuesday, February 19 was against the Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks. In the first quarter, Quinter outscored Wheatland 14-4. In the second quarter, Quinter was outscored by Wheatland 6-13 but was able to keep their lead making the score 20-17 before halftime. In the third quarter, Quinter advanced their lead scoring 12 points to Wheatland’s eight. In the final quarter, Quinter was able to score 14 points and hold Wheatland to 11 winning 46-36. Conner Havlas scored a total of 23 points, finishing the game as the top scorer.
The Bulldog’s semi-final game was against Dighton. In the first quarter, Quinter fell behind to an early lead from Dighton at 10-7. In the second quarter, Quinter outscored Dighton 16-15, making the score 25-23 with Quinter down. In the third quarter, Quinter outscored Dighton 15-12, taking a one-point lead 38-37. In the final quarter, Quinter took a big lead scoring 19 points to Dighton’s seven, winning the game 57-44 and advancing to the championship game. Havlas scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring.
In the championship game, Quinter took on the Wallace County Wildcats. In the first quarter, Quinter and Wallace had a tough battle and ended the quarter 8-8. In the second quarter, the Wildcats took a one-point lead scoring 15 to Quinter’s 14, leaving the Bulldogs trailing by one at the half. After half Quinter allowed Wallace 16 points and scored 13. In the final quarter, Quinter fell short of the victory scoring 17 to Wallace County’s 20Gordon Wolf was the top scorer with 18 points.
“It was fun to play in a championship game as a freshman. We played hard but came up short,” added freshman Kyler Johnson.
The Bulldogs will advance to Substate at Russell. They will play Osborne at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
